General Info
Hounsdown Eco Schools has been actively running for 4 years now. The aim of Hounsdown Eco Schools is to make Hounsdown School a more sustainable school and to help educate pupils, staff and the wider community about the role that they can play in making our community more sustainable. Hounsdown School has made a great deal of progress over the last 4 years and has achieved the Bronze and Silver Awards and their first Green Flag!
Eco Schools works around the following themes:
Energy, Waste, Litter, School grounds, Bio-diversity, Water, Healthy Living, Transport, and Global.
Eco Schools is run by a Lead Team of pupils from all Year Groups. This group decide the action plan for the Year and lead the projects that arise from it. These pupils are assisted by Ms Cook and Mr Stokes. Each tutor group also has 2 Eco Reps who feed back information to and from the tutor group and assist with the successful running of the Green Points Competition. Eco Schools is also supported by a number of other people in the school community, site staff, a governor, catering staff and other teachers as well as Minstead Study Centre and Sunnyfields Farm.
On Monday lunchtimes there is an Eco Schools Club which is open to any pupils so that there is an opportunity for any pupil who is interested to get involved.
Hounsdown Eco Schools is working as part of a Pyramid of Schools in the New Forest and with Minstead Study Centre. This allows us to work with the wider community. Recently we have also joined up with a community of Secondary Schools led by Ringwood School to share ideas and hopefully get involved in some joint projects.
Finally, there are many other projects going on in School which are supported by Eco Schools and which are all helping Hounsdown become a more sustainable school. For example the art department recently produced some amazing pieces of art work out of recycled materials. They are now working on living sculptures from willow. There are also plans for a large community Organic Garden on the school site. Pupils from Eco Schools have been researching the previous land use of the site and work on the ground itself should start soon.
